Installation - Option 1 or 2: Which is right for me?

Beginning with Kiddix Platform version 1.0.19 we have two install options, Windows Install and Native install.  This guide will help you choose which option is right for you.

Option 1 -- Windows Install  (Windows XP and Vista only)

Kiddix is an entire operating system that runs completely separate from Windows, however by using new technology we can install Kiddix inside a large file that is stored inside Windows.

Windows Install - Pros
  • No low level changes are made to your hard drive
  • Simple to uninstall
  • The Windows install should be used if your computer manufacturer did not give you a Windows CD-ROM and instead uses a System Restore Partition.

Windows Install - Cons
  • Slightly reduced performance
  • If Windows is not shutdown properly, Kiddix can't start.
  • Uses the Windows bootloader to start Kiddix
    • The Windows bootloader gives you the option to select Windows or Kiddix on each boot.  While the Windows bootloader is simple to use,
it doesn't include as many features as the Kiddix bootloader.

Option 2 -- Native Install (Windows -- all versions, Linux, or None)

A native install is the typical way an operating system is installed on a hard drive. Using this option we create a partition on your hard drive that is used to store Kiddix.

Native Install - Pros
  • The native installation has the best performance
  • We make use of the GRUB bootloader to present the choice to boot into Windows or Kiddix on each boot.  GRUB has better features over the Windows bootloader that may make it easier for your children to start Kiddix.

Native Install - Cons
  • Requires low level changes to your disk
    • We only use well known tools in a safe manner when repartitioning your hard drive to make room for Kiddix.  Repartitioning does however require low level changes to your hard drive that have the potential to corrupt data.  We have tested our installation procedure countless times and have never corrupted any data, but users should still use caution.
